If we have just installed Windows 95 in VirtualBox, it is possible that we have run into a fatal error that does not allow us to start Windows. So let’s see how to fix the “Windows protection error” in Windows 95 on VirtualBox.
Cause of the error
Windows 95 is a very old operating system and is not fully compatible with virtualization software such as VirtualBox.
This operating system has two specific errors when using processors with speeds greater than 350 MHz.
Despite the incompatibility, however, Microsoft has released corrective patches, which must be started directly from Windows.
To solve the problem, you can download a convenient virtual disk that allows the automatic application of these patches.
This disc can be downloaded directly from the archive.org website, and was created by Conner McCoy (LoneCrusader) with the assistance of Rudolph Loew (rloew).
How to fix “Windows protection error” in Windows 95: Applying the patch
Download the ISO image above and start it directly in the virtual machine in which we have installed Windows 95. Then restart the machine.
When the disk starts, we will be asked if we want to read the README file. We can type “n” and continue.
At this point, if the patch installation is successful, a green confirmation message will be shown.
We remove the virtual disk from the reader and restart the machine. At this point, Windows will start correctly.
If we have not yet completed the Windows installation, we will now be asked for more information regarding the configuration of your workstation. For more information on how to proceed, you can read this guide.
Microsoft Windows 95 is an outdated operating system, but very interesting, and it represented a great innovation for the time. It never ceases to surprise, despite all the problems that can be faced 😉
